Applied Research Scientist, AI Research

Descript is seeking an Applied Research Scientist to focus on multimodal understanding. The role involves building vision-language systems that allow Descript's agentic editing features to reason over the visual and audio content of a project. You will also be responsible for designing evaluation benchmarks, creating datasets, training models, and shipping them into production.

Responsibilities

• Build vision-language systems for agentic editing features.
• Design benchmarks and evaluations for editorial quality.
• Create datasets, including synthetic data generation.
• Train specialized models or fine-tune existing foundation models.
• Take models from prototype to production with the engineering team.
• Identify next research directions for Descript features.
• Publish work in academic venues if desired.

Requirements

• Proven ability to design and implement deep learning algorithms.
• Strong programming skills and fluency in PyTorch.
• Track record of generating new ideas in machine learning.
• Strong experimental judgment.
• Clear communication skills.
• PhD or Master's in deep learning or related field, or equivalent experience.
• At least one of: lead author of a top venue publication, or key role in shipping a deep learning feature.

Salary Base salary range: $197,000–$262,500, plus equity and benefits.
