The Concrete Supervisor is responsible for overseeing and directing all concrete-related construction activities on site. The role ensures that structural elements such as foundations, columns, beams, slabs, retaining walls, and pavements are executed with precision, structural integrity, and strict adherence to engineering drawings, safety standards, and quality control procedures.
Responsibilities
- Supervise day-to-day concrete construction activities, ensuring all works conform strictly to approved structural drawings, reinforcement details, and level specifications.
- Oversee formwork (shuttering) erection, alignment, scaffolding, and striking to guarantee structural accuracy, plumb, and stability.
- Coordinate the precise placement of reinforcement steel (rebars), embedment items, and form ties prior to concrete pouring.
- Supervise the mixing, transportation, and pouring operations of concrete, whether mixed on-site or delivered via transit mixers.
- Ensure proper vibration, compaction, and finishing of concrete to prevent honeycombing, segregation, structural flaws, or surface defects.
- Coordinate with the Quality Control (QC) team to conduct slump tests, cast concrete test cubes, and ensure proper curing procedures are strictly maintained.
- Manage the deployment and operation of concrete equipment, including concrete mixers, poker vibrators, batching plants, concrete pumps, and transit mixers.
- Monitor the consumption and stock levels of key raw materials (cement, sand, granite aggregates, water, and admixtures) to prevent stockouts or wastage.
- Ensure immediate reporting of equipment faults to the workshop and mechanics to minimize operational downtime.
- Direct, coordinate, and evaluate the performance of steel fixers, carpenters, concrete gangs, and general laborers on site.
- Set daily production targets and ensure adherence to construction schedules and milestones.
- Maintain discipline, punctuality, and proper coordination among all trade crews working on the concrete structure.
- Enforce strict compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) protocols during formwork, lifting, and concreting operations.
- Maintain an accurate daily log of concrete pours, volume utilized, cube samples taken, weather conditions, and workforce allocation.
- Report daily production outputs, material usage, and potential project bottlenecks to the Project Manager or Site Engineer.
- Assist in maintaining organized site records for quality audits and project evaluations.
Requirements
- Education: Ordinary National Diploma (OND), Higher National Diploma (HND), or Trade Test/Certificate in Civil Engineering, Building Technology, or a related technical field.
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years of hands-on site supervision experience focusing on structural concrete works, reinforced concrete buildings, bridges, or heavy civil infrastructure.
- Skills & Proficiencies: Deep technical knowledge of concrete technology, mix designs, curing methods, and reinforcement detailing; ability to read and interpret complex structural engineering drawings, bar bending schedules, and architectural plans; strong leadership, team management, and problem-solving skills under tight construction timelines; excellent physical endurance and capability to supervise strenuous site operations in diverse weather conditions.
