Backend Developer Intern

Tobams Group is seeking a Backend Developer Intern to join their growing engineering team. You will design, develop, and maintain robust backend services and APIs that power their web applications while collaborating with product, design, and AI/ML teams.

Responsibilities

• Assist in designing and building scalable backend services and RESTful APIs
• Support maintenance and improvement of existing backend systems
• Collaborate with AI/ML engineers to integrate machine learning models into production environments
• Implement backend logic for gamification features (points systems, leaderboards, badges, rewards, challenges, progress tracking)
• Work closely with frontend developers, product managers, and designers
• Write clean, testable, and maintainable code under supervision
• Assist in database design, optimization, and maintenance (MongoDB, PostgreSQL, MySQL)
• Support debugging, performance optimization, and application monitoring
• Contribute to API documentation and technical documentation
• Participate in code reviews, architecture discussions, and sprint meetings
• Support CI/CD processes and deployment activities

Requirements

• Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent experience)
• Basic to intermediate proficiency in JavaScript and TypeScript
• Foundational knowledge of Node.js (NestJS/Express.js)
• Understanding of RESTful API principles
• Familiarity with MongoDB, PostgreSQL, or MySQL
• Basic understanding of authentication and authorization (JWT, OAuth2)
• Familiarity with Git and version control workflows
• Understanding of backend architecture fundamentals and microservices concepts
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Willingness to learn, adapt, and work in a fast-paced remote team
• Humble, hardworking, and ambitious mindset
