Role Overview
The Veterinary Doctor will be responsible for the overall health, welfare, and productivity of broiler flocks across the Company's commercial broiler farms. This role involves providing veterinary oversight on disease prevention, vaccination, treatment, biosecurity, and farm health management to ensure optimal growth, feed conversion, and production performance.
Responsibilities
- Provide veterinary oversight for commercial broiler farm operations, ensuring optimal flock health, welfare, growth, and performance.
- Develop, implement, and monitor flock health programmes covering vaccination, disease prevention, treatment, medication, and routine health monitoring.
- Conduct regular flock inspections, clinical examinations, post-mortem examinations, disease investigations, and diagnostic assessments, and recommend appropriate corrective actions.
- Monitor key broiler performance indicators, including mortality, body weight, average daily gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), livability, uniformity, and production efficiency.
- Implement and monitor effective biosecurity programmes, including farm hygiene, sanitation, pest control, visitor management, movement control, and disease prevention measures.
- Monitor the proper use of vaccines, medications, antibiotics, disinfectants, and other veterinary products, ensuring compliance with approved protocols and withdrawal periods.
- Investigate disease outbreaks and mortality trends, coordinate laboratory testing where required, and implement appropriate treatment and preventive measures.
- Work closely with Farm Managers, Nutritionists, Production teams, and other relevant personnel to identify and address factors affecting flock health and performance.
- Maintain accurate veterinary and flock health records and prepare regular reports on mortality, disease incidence, medication, vaccination, and overall flock performance.
- Supervise and provide technical guidance to Farm Veterinary Assistants, Animal Health personnel, and farm staff on proper flock health management and biosecurity practices.
- Ensure compliance with applicable veterinary regulations, animal welfare standards, food safety requirements, and Company policies.
- Provide technical recommendations to Management on flock health risks, disease prevention, medication, vaccination, and measures to improve broiler production efficiency.
Requirements
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent veterinary qualification from a recognized institution.
- Must be fully registered and licensed to practise veterinary medicine in Nigeria.
- Minimum of 5 years' post-qualification experience, with substantial hands-on experience in commercial broiler farm operations.
- Proven experience in broiler flock health management, disease prevention, vaccination, treatment, and biosecurity.
- Strong knowledge of common poultry diseases, disease diagnosis, treatment protocols, and disease-control measures.
- Practical experience monitoring broiler performance indicators, including mortality, body weight, FCR, livability, uniformity, and average daily gain.
- Good understanding of poultry nutrition and its impact on flock health and performance.
- Experience in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation, post-mortem examination, and laboratory diagnosis.
- Strong knowledge of farm-level biosecurity and sanitation programmes.
- Ability to analyse flock health and production data and provide practical recommendations.
- Good leadership, communication, reporting, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
- High level of integrity, accountability, attention to detail, and commitment to animal health and welfare.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
- Willingness to work across commercial broiler farm locations and respond to critical flock health situations when required.
