Job Overview
A Radiologist is a physician trained in executing and interpreting medical images such as X-rays, CT scans, ultrasounds, and MRIs to diagnose illnesses and sometimes treat patients using medical radiation.
Responsibilities
- Supervise radiographers, nurses, and radiology staffs.
- Schedule examinations and assign radiology personnel.
- Participate in continuing education activities to maintain and develop radiology staffs.
- Implement protocols in areas such as drugs, resuscitation, emergencies, and infection control.
- Provide advice on types and quantities of radiology equipment needed to maintain facilities.
- Participate in quality improvement activities including discussions of areas where the risk of error is high.
- Establish or enforce standards for protection of patients and personnel.
- Administer or maintain conscious sedation during and after procedures.
- Review or transmit images and information using picture archiving or communications systems.
- Interpret images using computer-aided detection or diagnosis systems.
- Recognize or treat complications during and after procedures, including blood pressure problems, pains, over-sedation, and bleeding.
- Prepare a comprehensive interpretation report of findings.
- Obtain patient histories from electronic records, patient interviews, dedicated reports, or by communicating with referring clinicians.
- Conduct physical examinations to inform decisions about appropriate procedures.
- Confer with medical professionals regarding image-based diagnoses.
- Instruct radiology staffs in desired techniques, positions, or projections.
- Evaluate medical information to determine patient risk factors, such as allergies to contrast agents, or to make decisions regarding the appropriateness of procedures.
- Document the performance, interpretation, or outcomes of all procedures performed.
- Develop or monitor procedures to ensure adequate quality control of images.
- Coordinate radiological services with other medical activities.
- Provide counseling to radiological patients to explain the processes, risks, benefits, or alternative benefits.
- Communicate examination results or diagnostic information to referring physicians, patients, or families.
- Perform intervention procedures such as image-guided biopsy, percutaneous transluminal angioplasty, trans-hepatic biliary drainage, and nephropathy catheter placement. There will be 25% commission on all intervention procedures.
- Perform or interpret the outcomes of diagnostic imaging procedures including MRI, CT, mammography, or ultrasound.
- Exercise a personal sense of responsibility and make decisions in complex and difficult circumstances, especially in A/E theatre during multiple trauma situations.
- Participate in ongoing departmental audit and quality assurance programs, which may lead to proposals of change to current working practices.
- Delegate appropriately and supervise healthcare support workers to achieve the desired quality of patient care.
- Comply and contribute to implementation of departmental and professional policies and procedures.
- Participate in mandatory training and actively pursue a continuous professional development program.
- Keep up to date in new image techniques, technology, and departmental policies.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Membership or Fellowship or Board Certification in Radiology (with or without sub-specialty like MRI, CT scan, etc.)
